The Flamingo Casino is the first historic casino and hotel built in Las Vegas that put the groundwork to make this unknown and dry town the Mecca of gambling and a popular tourist destination with more than 50000000 annual visitors.

It all started by a visionary gangster, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, who managed to find various donors and investors to start the realization of a dream for the construction of an isolated terrestrial paradise for high-income customers. He managed to actually build what he dreamed and he launched the first casino hotel in 1946, named Flamingo. However, the cost overruns, many criticisms for trying to build something in the middle of nowhere, and investors that wanted a quick return on their money, led to the violent death of Bugsy in 1947.

Bugsy named Flamingo casino in honor of his friend Virginia Hill, who had this nickname because of her red hair and beautiful long legs. Bugsy however did not live to see the success of casinos in the region. The ownership of casino Flamingo changed hands frequently, and its development had many obstacles because of tight legislative framework of the State of Nevada. Thus, it continued its operation until the late 60s with uncertain future.

The year 1970 was historic for Flamingo casino because it was acquired by Hilton, which implemented a long-term investment plan and extensions to it, so that in the next 20 years to get today’s giant form and capacity. In 1976, the famous entry casino sign was installed on the main road to Las Vegas.

With 2920 rooms in 1989 the Flamingo hotel has a unique record surpassing 1000000 night stays. After consecutive room additions, in 1995 the hotel has 3565 rooms. In 1998 Flamingo again changed owners and the Hilton passed it to the hands of Park Place Entertainment, which gave its present name, Flamingo Las Vegas. In 2005, the Flamingo was acquired by Harrahs Entertainment, Inc.
